The all new work takes a modern twist to the Greek myth of Sisyphus. Sid, an up-and- coming politician is running for mayor of some gritty city somewhere. During a campaign stop he angers the leader (Old Man Zeus) of a small group of homeless people. A confrontation erupts and when the dust settles Sid, now Sisyphus, finds himself under Zeus’ rule in ancient Greece during the Age of Sisyphus.
Sisyphus the Musical is an entertaining portrayal of the paradox between human free will and divine intervention. Sisyphus must accept his role as leader, teach the citizens of Corinth to embrace their free will and their humanity despite the wrath of the gods.
"This project has been a little right brain and a little left brain from the start" said April Alsup, creator of Sisyphus the Musical, "We did a deep dive into Greek mythology, existentialism, predestination and lived to talk about it! Composing music in coalescence with telling a story is where it’s at and music theater lets you get out of the box at every twist and turn”.
Alsup studied music at Marietta College and Peabody Conservatory. While in college she worked as the house pianist on the Becky Thatcher Riverboat. After college, she toured with L.A.'s #1 80's band, "The Twisters" and one of Hollywood's most pretentious glam bands "Joshua". More recently, as a member of the Central City Opera board of directors, she helped steer the organization to have a greater emphasis on American music theater. These experiences have influenced her own musical compositions in a most delightful way.
